Después de un tiempo de rumores, donde se dudaba si Sir McKellen regresaría para interpretar al mítico Gandalf en El hobbit, hoy, el mismo actor  ha hecho oficial su regreso a la Tierra Media en su Web Site personal

"The Hobbits, two films, start shooting in New Zealand in February 2011. Filming will take over a year. Casting in Los Angeles, New York City and London has started. The script too proceeds. The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth."


El hobbit llegara a los cines en Noviembre del 2012 y estará protagonizada por Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Doug Jones y James Nesbitt.
